Frequently Asked Questions

Good planning begins with good questions. Browse answers by service, then contact us about the conditions at your property.

General

Where is US Landscaping & Construction based?
We are based at 270 River St #2 in Waltham, Massachusetts. Waltham is our primary service location. If your property is nearby, contact us with the address so we can confirm whether we can take on your project.
Do you work on residential and commercial properties?
Yes. We provide landscaping and outdoor construction for homeowners and commercial properties. The scope, access requirements and scheduling are discussed for each property.

Estimates

How do I request a free estimate?
Use the Request a Free Estimate form and tell us the service, project location and changes you have in mind. Photos are optional but helpful. We will contact you using your preferred method to discuss the next step.
What determines the cost of a project?
Size, access, existing conditions, preparation, selected materials and disposal needs all affect cost. An estimate should reflect the actual site and agreed scope, rather than a generic price per square foot.
How long will my project take?
Timing depends on scope, material availability, weather and site conditions. We discuss scheduling during the estimate process. We do not promise a fixed completion time before understanding the work.

Landscaping

Can you maintain a landscape after installation?
Yes. Lawn care, trimming, landscape-bed maintenance and seasonal cleanups can be discussed as an ongoing service. We agree on what is included and how often the property needs attention.
What should I do before a seasonal cleanup?
Identify any plants you want left undisturbed, remove personal items from lawn areas and let us know about access restrictions. We will discuss the cleanup scope with you before work begins.

Hardscaping

Why is the base beneath pavers important?
The base distributes loads and supports the surface. Suitable materials, excavation and compaction help reduce movement. The preparation depends on the soil, intended use and conditions at the property.
Do pavers need maintenance?
Yes. Debris removal, cleaning and attention to joints help keep paving in good condition. Cleaning methods and any sealer should be compatible with the selected product. High-pressure washing can damage joints if used incorrectly.

Masonry

How do I choose between natural stone and concrete masonry?
Natural stone brings variation in color and texture, while manufactured masonry offers more regular dimensions. Appearance, structural purpose, installation requirements and budget all influence the choice.

Patios & Walkways

How large should a patio be?
Begin with your furniture and allow space to pull out chairs and move around them. The right size also depends on doors, paths, planting beds and how much lawn you want to retain.
Should a walkway be straight or curved?
The route should fit the way you use the property. A straight path may suit a formal entrance, while a gentle curve can respond to planting or site features. Avoid curves that simply make the route inconvenient.

Retaining Walls

Does a retaining wall need engineering or a permit?
It may. Wall height, slopes, nearby structures and local requirements affect the answer. These questions should be reviewed before construction. Permit handling or engineering is not assumed to be included unless agreed in the project scope.

Lawn Installation/Sod

Should I choose sod or grass seed?
Sod gives immediate surface coverage but needs watering and time to root. Seed generally costs less in materials but takes longer to establish. Season, sunlight, soil and your ability to care for the new grass all matter.
When can I use a new lawn?
Wait until the grass is established enough for the intended traffic. Rooting and growth depend on weather, soil and watering, so follow the guidance provided for your installation rather than a fixed number of days.

Artificial Turf

Is artificial turf completely maintenance-free?
No. It does not need mowing, but debris removal, brushing and occasional rinsing may be needed. Pet use and the chosen product change the care requirements. Artificial turf can also become hot in direct sun.
Can artificial turf replace a patchy area of lawn?
Possibly, but the cause of the problem should be considered first. Shade, compaction and water movement may also affect an artificial-turf installation. We discuss the site before recommending a surface.

Grading

Will grading solve every water problem?
No. Surface grades are one factor in how water moves. Persistent water problems may require separate drainage assessment or engineering. We do not assume that specialized drainage installation is included in grading work.

Driveways

Can landscaping be included with a driveway improvement?
Yes. Walkway connections, borders, planting beds and lawn edges can be planned together with paving. Reviewing the entire entrance helps the finished project look cohesive.
Can I make my driveway wider?
That depends on the property and local requirements. Lot boundaries, utilities, runoff and permitted surface area should be considered before changes to the driveway footprint are planned.

Outdoor Steps

Can steps and a walkway be built as one project?
Yes. Planning the elevations and materials together helps create cleaner transitions. Handrail and dimensional requirements must be considered for the individual site.

Water Features

What should I consider before adding a water feature?
Think about maintenance access, nearby trees, power, water supply and seasonal preparation. The right feature suits both the setting and the level of upkeep you are comfortable with.
