Before you build a retaining wall, ask these questions

Before you build a retaining wall, ask these questions

Height is only the beginning. Soil, slopes, water and nearby structures all affect a retaining-wall project.

What is the wall expected to support?

A garden border and a wall below a driveway face very different demands. Describe the grade change and what sits above it, including parking, structures and sloping ground. Those details can change the design approach substantially.

Where will water go?

Water behind a wall adds pressure. The construction approach needs to consider the site’s water conditions, appropriate backfill and how water can leave the system. The visible stone is only one part of a functional retaining wall.

Does the project need review?

Local requirements and the specific design determine whether permits or engineering are needed. Do not assume that a wall is exempt simply because it looks short from one side. Discuss those questions before construction starts.

How will the surrounding space work?

Consider how you will reach the upper area, maintain planting and move equipment around the wall. Steps or a path may be useful, but they need to be planned as part of the overall layout.

What should the estimate explain?

Ask for the proposed scope, material, preparation and site assumptions. Clarify what happens if unsuitable soil or other unexpected conditions are found. A useful estimate makes the construction approach understandable, not just the price.
